This one was only challenging because I wanted to center the design.  It took a couple of tries to get it to an acceptable, although not perfect position.

We have a busy weekend coming up - although I'm holding out hope that I'll be able to finish at least two or more before class on Monday.   We'll see...

Uncle Homer

Busy busy busy lately, but not too busy to quickly do another square!    This is square #A-6, also known as Uncle Homer.

This is square #3 out of 169!  and so far the piece count is 39!  Several thousand more to go...

Well, although I've been thinking about Dear Jane for over two weeks, nothing much has happened.  Life gets in the way of progress, I guess.
A new grandbaby in a few short weeks, gift quilts that have to be finished, an online modern Block-of-the-Month group where I'm wayyy behind - no pressure, but there's sooo much to do!

Finally today I grabbed a couple of hours and made my second block... Number B-4, a.k.a. Chris's Soccer Field.  (somehow I don't think Jane came up with that name...)

I loved doing this one, the paper piecing was fun - now I'm really looking forward to another one or two blocks tomorrow!
Next up, A-6 - Uncle Homer.  Can't wait - I'm tempted to stay up tonight and do one more...    

Dear Jane

It happened.  I've completely lost my mind!!!  I succumbed to the lure of Dear Jane.  If you're a quilter, you probably know what I'm talking about... and if you're not a quilter, you'll find out over the next months/years as I follow in the footsteps of many quilters before me.
Aaaagggghhh!  I'm starting a Dear Jane Quilt.

Yes I love modern quilts but there was something about the story and the challenge that called to me.  My skills are not up to this project now, but by the time I'm done they will be markedly improved, I'm sure!

So tonight, I started with a small group of quilters, all of whom are more experienced than I,  they will be a wonderful source of tips on working these tiny pieces.  Our fearless leader, Carrie, was very helpful as I tentatively paper-pieced my first Dear Jane block, #A-8 (Florence Nightingale).

Only 168 more to go!  The quilt is made up of a field of small (4.5") squares, 13x13 for a total of 169.  Each square is different, some made up of many tiny pieces.  These center squares are surrounded by a border of intricately pieced triangles and again, each one is different.  The quilt will be assembled using  several techniques - paper piecing, applique, machine piecing, hand piecing...and each will be individually quilted by hand and/or machine.

I'll be writing more about Jane as we go along, so for now I'm simply celebrating my first square.. Our group meets again in a month and I want to have many more finished before then.

Meet square #A-8... aka Florence Nightingale

Here's a pillow top I'm working on.  Yes, that pillow, the one I started weeks ago that should have taken a couple of days!  I'm not happy with how it turned out, but I'm determined to finish it.  In the last few days I've made the back, added the zipper, pinned the 'sandwich' using muslin as a backing, and today I started quilting it.    Won't be able to touch it for the next few days (no sewing machine) but I should be able to finish eventually in my lifetime.
